'89 Bronco II, 2.9L, 168k mi. While driving home last week, I was coming down a long grade at about 50 mph. At the bottom of the hill as I was easing into the throttle, it downshifted very hard and loud(rear end clunked). After that episode I noticed that the trans no longer shifted into OD(converter lock-up?). It use to shift into OD about 50+mph. I also noticed that when I lift off the throttle to coast at that speed, the RPM's drop off to almost an idle and when I accelerate, there is a pause until the motor picks up to where it should be at that speed. When I put the shifter into the "D" position, the RPMs would not drop off. It worked this way for a few days, now the RPMs drop off almost all the time when I lift my foot to coast. It almost seems like there is a one way clutch that doesn't lock up all the time.
I don't know if I am looking at two different problems, or the two conditions have the same source. Several years ago the OD stopped working for a while. Sometime after that, the front seal failed. After I replaced the seal and added new fluid, the OD worked again.
Any suggestions are much appreciated.
