Torque1st,

What I was meaning they swapped out the D44 gear set and swapped in a later model gear set from a D44ttb. Not the readend it's self.

Just drive the thing. If it visibly drags one end or the other in dirt then you have a problem. Otherwise you cannot run 4x4 on dry pavement without driveline wind-up. That is the bucking and chirping sound.

when it does it while turning its called crab walking , something thats pretty common with straight axles,it can be fixed but usually people with trucks that do it just make sure not to 4X4 on dry pavement . when it does it in a straight line it could be something as simple as odd sized tires or even overly worn tires on one end of your truck, usually the front . measure the tires height . if theres as much as a 1/2'' difference it could cause the problem . an old trick that i have used when to broke to by new tires, is to lower the pressure on the back tires to 20 or 25 lbs and run the fronts at 45 lbs. it gives better traction and the tires think theyre the same size . not recomended for highway but up here in backwoods alaska thats not a problem , and my girlfriend loves it because she can go more places with the extra traction. and i like it cause i get less calls to dig her out of ditches , goodluck, bob

I had the same problem with my 79 f150, only with the rear chirping when in 4x4. According to the bill of material numbers on my axles they were the same. I pulled them apart & found 3.50 in the rear & 3.73 in the front. Some previous owner changed the front to get the limited slip case from whatever Dana 44 he pulled it from without bothering to check the gear ratios. I changed the ring & pinion in the front. Problem gone! I got the 3.50 parts from a great member of this board that had them listed as free, just pay shipping. Thanks again, he knows who he is.

Lightbulb Tire chirping

The reason you are experencing tire chirp and a wheel hop on hard pavement is because a part time transfercase does not have a differential in it like a full time case has. woody

wheel hop is normamal when on pavement or hard surface you can have up to a 15% differance in gear sizes from front to rear and yes two diffrent sizes of tire will cause major trouble
