Band saw

My dad and I worked over an old cast iron meat cutting saw we got from a local gro. that had to replace it.(they had to go to stainless construction, health codes) All we did was to slow down the band by putting a gear reducer between the drive motor and the driven wheel, make a non moving table and change to a metal cutting blade. Still in use after 25+ years.

Sweet! I wish I could slow the wood shop unit I have down for use with metal. I may have to investigate it some more.

If anybody wants to try doing this be sure that you have a way to let the motor slip if it binds when cutting metal. What we did was to let the weight of the motor keep tension on the drive belt by letting it hang , like a hinge. Gear reducer to driven wheel was chain drive. For safety use a sm block of wood when you have to cut all the way thru you metal, helps to keep your fingers away from blade because when you cut thru your work it has a habit of kind'a jumping away from you.
