Air ride?

Replaced lower ball joints this weekend on the front of the wife's 2011 Expedition Limited.
First time I have ever heard the air compressor for the air ride run when I was getting done.
Asked the wife, she says it runs most times at start up, and shows a warning on dash after a big bump is hit.
The rear air struts were replaced just before we bought it a couple years ago.
I don't see/hear anything obvious like a leak.
Looked over the wiring, connectors, and ride height sensors.
Sprayed some contact cleaner on those.
Never looked into this/these at all until earlier today.
Couldn't follow the air lines very far underneath, looked like they ran over top of fuel tank...
Wasn't even able to locate the compressor, sounded like it was behind the bumper somewhere under hood in front...
Appreciate whatever anyone might be able to share; common troubles, methods to troubleshoot, links to schematics, or anything else I might need soon.
BIG THANK YOU

The compressor on my 2006 Navigator is in front of the battery (behind the passenger headlight). Could possibly be the same on yours. Also, I believe running at startup is perfectly normal as long as it doesn't continue to run and cycle constantly. I know on my Lincoln, when you put it in parking would lower the air bags a little for easy exit (known as trimming I believe). If yours does the same then hearing the compressor at startup would be normal to replace the air that was let out to trim it. I ended up replacing the struts with Monroe coil overs eventually... Best damn decision I ever made after fighting the air suspension for months and months.

Appreciate that.
The noise from the compressor does sound like it must be located somewhere in that general area.
Not sure how deep I will dig into this.
The Expedition is needing more and more repair all the time.
Seems as though it has began to reach the end.
Served well, but fixing all the little stuff is adding up BIG.
Wife says that she hits railroad tracks or potholes and warning message for air ride lights up on dash.
Goes off short time later.
The struts were replaced by previous owners.
So they are probably 4 years old or so.
Appreciate the help ! ! !

Son got a fancier scan tool.
Have some other MAJOR issues with this vehicle now (but starting another thread for that).
Showed C1885 right rear air ride sensor fault.
Smoking the system didn't show me anything.
So I will now look at the rr sensor if/when I look into this further.

Yeah, if the sensor is bad, it would cause the compressor to cycle when it doesn't need to, definitely.
