Warn/Ford winch kit

Is this the best/easiest way to add a winch? Best price I've found is 2173.00 2663.00 with tax and shipping

I’m tempted by a used factory winch take-off available locally at half the retail price.

Well, considering that the Rough Country winch plate is $200 and the Badland Apex 12k winch with synthetic rope is $600, I would say that Ford is completely insane with that pricing. NO WAY IN HELL I would pay nearly $3k for a winch setup. But maybe that's just me....

Kind of depends on how you use it and the conditions you may encounter while doing so. Rough Country and Harbor Freight are not in the same league as Warn so in many of these comparisons, you get more with the higher end product but that is part of the increased expense. If you go with Ford, you pay the OEM convenience fee so it will cost more than it should. You could still by the stuff yourself and do your own install and that would save you some money. I've had Warn winches mounted on my vehicles since the 80s but for the 2019, I went with a cradle. Much more versatility for me as it allows it to be mounted in the front or rear or used in another vehicle if needed.

I figured that would be exactly what somebody would say, and so I almost went into this with my first post. But I'll do it now. Warn quality isn't what it's cracked up to be. And it hasn't been for many years. In fact, throughout the 2000s and 2010s I used to subscribe to offroad magazines. They frequently would do "winch tests" where they'd buy all the brands and go out and torture test them. The lower end brands typically would beat Warn every time. In fact, the Warn winches sometimes were the only ones that broke hard parts inside the drum.

I've been using Badland winches for years now without a single issue other than a solenoid pack that was a little finnicky on the 5000 lb. winch I put on my UTV. My 12000 lb. winches have always been flawless. I'd put them up against any brand on the market.

What do you think about putting this on the front and then using a portable winch that can be hooked up to the front or rear?https://www.harborfreight.com/12000-...4aAtXOEALw_wcB

If you are completely satisfied with a harbor freight winch then that is all that matters. I do own a few things from harbor freight but when it comes to winches, I will stick with Warn.

I think the first time I slip trying to carry that thing with a winch on it in the winter time I will regret the decision

generally, I agree on the harbor freight stuff. I tend to avoid anything that is electric or powered. With that being said, I have one of the smaller winches to load vehicles into my trailer. And there are three or four off-road recovery teams with YouTube channels that exclusively use harbor freight winches doing some pretty difficult recoveries. I believe the Apex winches are a great value for the price.

I went with a Smittybuilt on the front of my 2019 and it's worked out just fine the half a dozen times I have used it.

I picked up the Rough Country kit for mounting behind the stock bumper, and I've got a Warn 9.5 still sitting in the box from many years ago....I'm not worried about pulling my truck out of mud bogs, so the size of the winch is good for me around the cabin and utility use. The mount is definitely solid and the fact that doesn't affect the bumper or anything is great.
