My endless pursuit for a minty old heavy truck to haul water has lead me to this possibility:
It’s advertised as a 1985 Ford F800 Superior Fire Truck. 429 w/ Allison auto. It’s super clean and well maintained but it only works for me if it’s relatively simple to remove the fire fighting apparatus and just leave the big tilt cab and frame, I’d then put a 15’ deck on it.
Anybody have experience with these Superior trucks?
It’s hydraulic brakes.
Apparently the stainless steel tank appears clean inside and holds water, just 500 Imp Gal
could I get away with leaving the transfer case in place and disconnecting the pump?
Ya definitely a cool cab to bring the whole family!
Automatic transmissions in trucks of the era did not have a park feature, they relied entirely on the parking/emergency brake to hold it in place when parked. When converting a truck chassis to a fire truck the brake unit is removed from the back of the transmission and relocated to the back of the fire pump
I converted a 68 C-800 fire truck chassis back to a standard truck to install a spreader bed, the parking brake unit was a easy fit back onto the transmission buck some of the linkages and linkage brackets had been changed and were difficult to find.
The fire pump is a 2000 lb monstrosity that takes up a lot of space and sticks up nearly a foot above the trucks frame interfering with any type of bed one would want to install
also once the pump is removed a cross member will need to be made and installed to support a carrier bearing to support the addition drive shafts needed
Thanks for that! This look like maybe a pass…… unless I framed up some tall cross beams to get the deck to clear the pump….? Then I’d have a higher center of gravity but probably still useful for a low profile plastic 2000 imperial gallon water tank….
