i have a 79 f-150 4x4, and from reading the tag on my rear diff, i think i have 3:61 gears, is this right becuase the ratio does not sound familiar to me. I also think its a 9 inch rear, is that right fro this year? Also, is a dana 44 front good? It seems like a lot of people look down on them, but im not going to be doing any serious wheeling, just messing around in some mud or snow.
i forgot to add this, i want to change my gears to maybe 4:11 or 4:56 i havent decided yet but i was told from a friend that when i change the differential gears, i also need to change the transfer case gears. Is this true or not?
Whats the largest gear size i could put in the stock carrier? Also, what kind of vehicle could a find the right size carrier in, i was hoping i could search the local junk yards for one.
I'm in the process of regearing mine right now... a 3.72 is the largest that will fit in that stock carrier... BUT I have seen places where you can find "thick gears" that will fit 4.11 on up in the same carrier. If you are looking for the replacement, any 70's truck should do. Just make sure it has the high-pinion (reverse rotation) front end, as yours probably does.
Dana 44s are ok for the occasional off-roader, but if you are going to get too serious, especially with those large tires, a Dana 60 would be more suited for the job. Yes, your truck SHOULD have a 9" rear and Dana 44 front... 3.50 gears are most common.
