A New Code

My airbag light came on again. This time my scanner showed a B0010-13; Passenger Frontal Stage 1 Deployment Control - Circuit Open. I'm not sure what that means or what I should look for. Any advice?

You need to explicitly identify what you are working on.

I know nothing about these but maybe this will help you get in the right direction.

A "B0010-13" code on a 2015 Ford F250 Super Duty indicates a problem with the passenger frontal airbag deployment control circuit, specifically that it's open, meaning the system isn't detecting a potential crash scenario and is not ready to deploy the airbag in case of a collision.

What this means:
  • Potential safety risk:
If this code is present, the passenger airbag may not deploy in a crash, potentially reducing safety for the passenger.
  • Check the wiring:
The most likely cause is a faulty wire or connection within the passenger airbag system, which could be due to damage from wear and tear, corrosion, or a loose connector.

Possible causes for the B0010-13 code:
  • Damaged wiring:
Look for frayed, broken, or corroded wires within the airbag system, particularly around the passenger seat area.
  • Loose connectors:
Check for loose connections at the airbag sensor, the airbag control module (ACM), or other related connectors.
  • Faulty airbag sensor:
The sensor itself could be malfunctioning, not registering the necessary impact force to trigger deployment.
  • Airbag control module issue:
In rare cases, the ACM itself might be faulty and not sending the correct signals to the airbag system.

How to fix the B0010-13 code:
  • Professional repair:
Due to the safety-critical nature of the airbag system, it is highly recommended to have a qualified automotive technician diagnose and repair the issue.
  • Visual inspection:
Check for visible damage to the wiring and connectors under the passenger seat.
  • Wire repair:
If necessary, repair or replace damaged wiring, ensuring proper connections are made.
  • Sensor replacement:
If the airbag sensor is faulty, it may need to be replaced.
  • ACM check:
In rare cases, the ACM may need to be checked or replaced if the problem lies within the module.

The fault code indicates that the RCM has detected that the resistance of the passenger side airbag circuit exceeds allowable limits.

For a non-technician, the only thing I can suggest is to de-power the SRS per service manual (see below), wait one minute, the re-seat the connectors on the RCM and the passenger side airbag to see if the issue can be resolved.

Depowering Procedure

WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on airbag, Safety Canopy or side air curtain assemblies. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these assemblies, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.

WARNING: Never disassemble or tamper with seat belt deployable components, including pretensioners, load limiters and inflators. Never back probe deployable device electrical connectors. Tampering or back probing may cause an accidental deployment and result in personal injury or death.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of accidental deployment, do not use any memory saver devices. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death.

NOTE: The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the correct Restraints Control Module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition is ON.

NOTE: The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
  1. Turn all vehicle accessories OFF.
  1. Turn the ignition to OFF.
  1. At the Body Control Module (BCM), located in the RH lower kick panel, remove the lower kick panel fuse cover and the RCM fuse 33 (10A) from the BCM . For additional information, refer to the Wiring Diagrams manual.
  1. Turn the ignition ON and visually monitor the air bag warning indicator for at least 30 seconds. The air bag warning indicator remains lit continuously (no flashing) if the correct RCM fuse has been removed. If the air bag warning indicator does not remain lit continuously, remove the correct RCM fuse before proceeding.
  1. Turn the ignition to OFF.
  1. WARNING: Always deplete the backup power supply before repairing or installing any new front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) component and before servicing, removing, installing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side impact sensors or the restraints control module (RCM). Nearby components include doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches. Refer to the Description and Operation portion of Section 501-20B for location of the RCM and impact sensor(s). To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least 1 minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped). Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .

A New Code

Thank you for the information. Since this started, I have replaced the passenger front side and rear crash sensors, the passenger airbag above the dash, took the front passenger seat out and checked/cleaned all the electrical connections underneath and couldn’t find anything loose or broken wires. I’ve been dealing with this airbag light on and off for the past year. As much as I hate to, I guess I’ll have to take it to the Ford dealership to have them diagnose the problem. The only things I can think of now is the sensor inside the seat cushion (if it even has one), or the SRS module itself is faulty. I don’t think I have sensors in the passenger seat belt hardware. Very frustrating!!!

I've done that several times and it does keep the light off for awhile, sometimes a few weeks, then it'll come back on. When it does, it usually happens not too long after I start the truck. It's almost like it stays off until it cycles a few times. This is not my daily driver. I only drive it once or twice a month when I'm pulling my horse trailer. I will inspect the front passenger air bag wires and the passenger door impact sensor again; maybe I missed something. Thanks!
