Turned over fine one moment then it didnt. Pulled the starter and see it has a missing tooth, spun it on the ground and the bendex was bouncing around not staying fulling engaged. I know ill need a starter but will I need a flywheel, Im guessing yes?
Thanks
I guess ill drop the trans this time, it will give me a chance to clean up the trans and transfer case from the oil bath of the previous engine, which I just replaced, two months ago. :|
and after searching the best way to get the crossmember off, i m pulling the engine again, or at least pulling it forward with some long engine to bell housing bolts as guide pins
Those teeth look pretty wore in spots, but none are broken off. I would put a new starter and carry on...
FYI, if your engine tries to start but dies, wait until it completley stops turning before trying the starter again. that is where i think most all ring gear damage occurs.
Starter rebuild kit - Victory Lap FDS-02. Amazon says it fits Ford 4 in. Mod II, 4-1/2 in., 4-1/2 in. Mod I, 4-1/2 in. Mod II DD Starters used from 1960 through 1992.
After two wrong starters (too long overall) from the parts store i dug out a starter from a 1979 351, swapped that bendex, Filed a few teeth on the flywheel and all seems to be good. Gonna get the kit anyway for the future.

I have a similar issue, after pulling my starter and inspecting my ring gear. I have two teeth broken off, and will need to replace the ring gear before it gets worse. I assume that the ring gear can be removed from the flywheel and be replaced, correct? My starter looks to be in good shape and I have been driving with this one each year since replacing it in 2019, but the truck can be difficult to start at times, requiring feathering the gas and cranking multiple times in order for the engine to fire. I see your cautionary warning regarding " if your engine tries to start but dies, wait until it completley stops turning before trying the starter again. that is where i think most all ringgear damage occurs." Good point. Could my timing be off as well and cause issues?
My current engine in my '66 has a bad spot on the flywheel. I carry a socket and wrench that fits the end of the crank. If I'm on the dead spot, I can give the engine a slight turn and she starts right up. It will be replaced when I swap in the 300
