E40D plug lube????
E40D plug lube????
can some one PLEASE TELL ME WHERE THIS GOES OR IF IT GOES IN MY TRANSMISSION…. Sorry lol went to change fluid and filter in my trans. And this was in the pan. Can’t find any info on it on line but for sale on eBay. Transmission has been rebuilt. To my knowledge with a shift kit in it.
Truck info :
1997 Ford f150
Lariat four-wheel-drive
5.4 triton 2v V8
E40D transmission. Please help this is driving me absolutely nuts and I don’t want to put it back together without knowing if this is supposed to be in there and if so, where it’s supposed to go.
I do not think that little plug or clip plug goes in a E4OD
Maybe look at an exploded diagram of the valve body and transmission
I assume you did that?
You found one for sale on Ebay?
Not a bonafied trans man but do have a Ford Chassis Master certificate and trophy
Helped our trans man a ton, never saw the part in your hand while helping him
I would leave it out and finish the trans service
Maybe look at an exploded diagram of the valve body and transmission

I guess I should have explained a little better. Lol that was sitting in the bottom of the transmission pan when I dropped it to do service on my transmission.. first service after being rebuilt.
I found it on eBay from my image search and a couple of other websites. Trust me I did not buy it not knowing where it went. Lol I did have a problem when I went to put it in reverse after it was rebuilt the truck would stall out and they rebuilt it twice, and the last time they went and got another transmission because they found odd where if I remember correctly on the old bell housing inside. And on the third time it wouldn’t stall, but it would act like it and sometimes acted like it wanted to takeoff in reverse. Besides finding this UFO in my transmission pan, the transmission filter was also sitting on the bottom of the pan. It came down with the pan without me, touching it and obvious signs on the pan from where it had been there for a while.. I got it put back together last night without the UFO and will finish filling it with fluid today and let you know how it went.

Lagniappe. Toss it or put it on a key chain and go about your day.
Pray tell then, what is it?
Can you post the links to what you found?
lol

lol like I said it’s called a lube plug on eBay and other sites. 🤷 But no one knows what it is or where it goes.

If you are unable to post a link, then can you post an eBay auction number where you found the exact duplicate of the plug that you showed in your hand in Post #1?

and I even called and emailed the transmission shop that is selling this and they could not give me any answers. All they could tell me is they sell many parts for many transmissions which told me never to buy from them.

Thanks for the link.
The plug is supposed to be installed at the back of the transmission between the case and extension housing, depending on case and housing you have.
Since you have reported that your transmission has not only been rebuilt, it has also been replaced with another transmission, there is an additional complication.
Your reports that the plug was laying in the pan, and the filter was laying in the pan, and the transmission has been back to the rebuilder three (3) times, are all quite concerning.
On November 10, 1997, concerning this lubrication plug for the E4OD in the 1997 F-150, Ford published the following precautionary notes in Ford TSB Article 97-23-13:
CAUTION:
BE SURE TO USE ONLY THE NEW DESIGN EXTENSION HOUSING WITH THE TRANSMISSION CASES CONTAINING THE LUBRICATION PLUG.
NOTE:
DO NOT USE AN EXTENSION HOUSING WITHOUT THE CAST-IN SHOULDER OR BOSS ON ANY CASE HAVING THE LUBRICATION PLUG AS TRANSMISSION DAMAGE MAY RESULT.

OMG!!!!!! Thank you!!!!! No one knew! Now, even though that bulletin only shows the 4R 100 Transmission I know both that in the E 40 D were close to the same. And also mine has a transfer case four-wheel-drive. So I’ll have to see if there’s currently one in there or not.
It is even titled "E4OD". In fact, "AT-E4OD" are the very first words in the title.
The bulletin goes on to identify the 1997 F-150, with the E4OD as the vehicle intended to be discussed.
I'll cut the bulletin in half so that the forum software will allow the print to be larger. Just understand that the lower half is cut off below.
To see the full length, non annotated version of the bulletin above that was posted earlier in my post upthread, click on the bulletin itself, and it will open in a separate window, at about the same scale rendering as the top half appears immediately above.
That is some weird work from Ford. Very strange. The Ford part description calls it an "oil gallery plug". Why somebody at Ford would relabel it as a "lubrication plug" makes no sense. That's actually seems the opposite of its effect. It probably started as "lubrication system plug" and somebody shortened it.
If it is an oil gallery plug and it has fallen out that most likely means that everything on the oil gallery received poor lubrication due to low pressure. You might have bigger problems than just finding the hole to stick it in.
