Part way through the instrument cluster (printed circuit pigtail)...So all I have is the old pig tail trying to match stuff up..Some things seem obvious but then I get crossed up cause either the sources like Fordification have different colors than I have and other schematics don't exactly line up. So this is a 73 dentside with a 302, 2wd longbed - nothing special. - has gauges
My wires are:
Slot 1: Green w/ black - I think this goes to the dimmer switch
Slot 2 : empty
Slot 3: White w/Blue - Oil sensor???
Slot 4: empty
Slot 5: Red w/White - Temp Sensor?
Slot 6: empty
Slot 7: Black - 2 wires (same slot)- I assume some sort of ground - ???
Slot 8: empty
Slot 9: Blue w/ Red (2 wires)- One diagram indicated that should be oil sensor - doesn't seem correct ????
Second row of pins
Slot 10: Yellow - ????
Slot 11: Red - ????
Slot 12: Green w/ white - ????
Slot 13: Black -????
Slot 14: empty
Slot 15: Orange - ????
Slot 16: Red w/ (Orange or yellow - faded) - ????
Slot 17: Purple - Dual Brake sw (according to one of the schematics)
Slot 18: White w/ red - ????
Most of these I left with ???? because I can't seem to have schematics that agree - either colors are in different orders or they end up at different things so hoping someone has some ideas and I'll take a majority wins. Eventually I will have to test these all out but since this is just in build phase and no power yet, Im trying to get it right the first time.
Do you have the gauge cluster this is going to plug in to? If so, plug it in & then trace each color wire to where it goes on the printed circuit. That should give you an idea of what the wires are for.
For instance, if the wire in slot 3 runs to the trace on the PC that goes to one side of the oil pressure gauge, it is for the oil sender.
I can give you what the wires are for on a later plug, but color & location may be different on a 1973. Maybe some are the same....
Here's just the color & the function in no particular order: red w white temp, white w blue & green w white turn indicator lights, purple, red brake light, blue w red 2 dash lights, yellow w black red w yellow amp gauge, black resistance wire powers IVR, orange gas gauge, white w red oil gauge, black ground, location 9.
The 1974 wiring diagram at fordification.com matches your connector colors with the exception of pin 13....i think one of those wires are taped off in the harness...I think it is the resisted power source for the cluster and the additional wire is added to allow the crimp connector to work since the resistor wire is so small...
You may have the correct location based on the charts, but I think some of your wiring functions are mislabeled.
Black with green is usually accessory power. For the dashboard this is usually good for the instrument cluster voltage regulator.
Blue with red is always the same function. It is for cluster illumination only. This is the dimmer function of your headlight switch rheostat.
The highbeam light is a different color. Not sure about the others cause I just don’t have a chart in front of me.
@1TonBasecamp is instrument cluster voltage regulator that additional piece to the lower right of Speedometer in the picture?
You stated Black with green, I only have a green wire with a black stripe.
So blue with red, you indicate is cluster illumination so maybe I did not trace the lines fully for those and they actually touch all the light bulbs? I got 2 wires so one must come in from the dimmer switch as you say but not sure yet where the other comes from. have to do some more research.
Location 7 should be the black with green stripe. The stripe can be really hard to see. There should be 2 black wires in this position, a short one with a capped end & the long one that runs into the harness. This is a resistance wire that drops the voltage going to the instrument voltage regulator, the silver box on the back of the cluster. The box powers the oil, temp & fuel gauges.
Probably enough differences between 73 and 78 to be careful with. But probably also more likely just location differences, rather than color differences.
I finally fought my way through a few stacks to get to the drawer where I knew my diagrams were. Now I’ve got my reading glasses, bottle of Squirt, and already ate half my Round Table pizza. So I’m ready!
Mine won’t show location, but you already have that. Mine just shows color and function.
Some have already been cleared up, but I’ll mention them anyway.
Oil pressure is white with red.
Water temperature is red with white.
Fuel gauge is orange.
Ammeter wires are yellow with black and red with orange.
Dual brake warning lamp, if present, is red with yellow.
Constant voltage regulator is black with green.
Black with no stripe Is ground.
Blue with red is illumination.
Green with black is high beam indicator.
Green with white is left-hand turn indicator.
White with blue is right hand turn indicator.
And yes, as I think someone already confirmed, that little flipped over DealyBob is your instrument voltage regulator. Aka “constant voltage supply” in th older books.
Black with green gives power to it, from the ignition switch, and the other trace sends power out to each of the gauges.
The colored wires to the other side of the gauges are the ones that go out to the senders.
@1TonBasecamp@m78@scottscott Much thanks - not home at the moment to work on this but on paper its starting to all come together. Wiring is just not my strong suit but if I have time, I can make my way through it. I'm sort of one of those people that I hate to do things twice. As long as I have it all apart and no dash in, I'd like to get all the wires to their correct locations and tidied up before I put it all back together. I think I had the "running/engine" side of the wiring all set and was pretty solid on all those but if I had no gauges, thats not fun either or not lights and so on so I really appreciate the wisdom and guidance.
