I currently have 275/65/r20 tires on my 2020 F-350. While shopping for a new set of dedicated winter tires, I am thinking about going to 275/70/r18 as I already have a set of 18" rims. Tire size comparison calculator shows the difference of overall diameter of the tires is <3.0%. Are there any showstoppers or other factors I should consider before changing out the tire size?
for winter snow driving conditions, you want a tall skinny tire with aggressive tread pattern to dig down into the snow for traction.
a wide tire will float and will give you a lot less traction.
To my understanding, for 2020 F350, OEM tire sizes are 275/65/r20, 275/70/r18 or 275/65/r18. Thus, I am planning to go from 275/65/r20 to dedicate winter tires in 275/70/r18.
Are you suggesting narrower tires than what's listed as OEM sizes? If so, any particular width you would recommend?
the 275/65/20 is 34 tall by 10.38 wide.
the 275/70/18 is 33 tall by 10,38 wide.
same width, but i1inch smaller tall. this would make it a little easier to loose traction, and
knock your speedometer off by about 2 mph.
there is not much in selection for smaller width tire though. so i would look for an aggressive snow and tire. they will be louder on dry pavement, but will help in snow and ice.
i run the cooper AT-3 tire here in New Jersey on my plow trucks, but we rarely get the now and ice like you do .
