Odometer roll back

OK, this may sound strange but... I had a recall taken care of on my 2023 F350 for the instrument panel cluster. When I took it in my odometer reading was approximately 295xx. When I got my truck back it was 20097. After discussing it with the dealership, they finally agreed that I was correct, that when they ordered the dash module my mileage was 294xx. If the correct mileage is stored on the PCM, why is an erroneous mileage being displayed? How could this have happened? How can I get the correct mileage displayed?

I am being told that to correct it I have to drop the truck off, they will tear the dash down again, remove the module, order a new module and put it in with the correct mileage on it. This will definitely take a few days and at approximately 2000 miles per month, I obviously need my truck and not have it down for a while due to a tech making a mistake while doing a Ford recall.

This is kinda spooky knowing that someone can alter mileage this easily.

Thanks in advance,

Mileage memory is contained by the das cluster. They made the mistake when they ordered your cluster. If you went and pulled one from a salvage yard you would have the mileage of that truck. If it was an increase I would have something done. As is leave it alone. No harm there.

The mileage is stored in both the pcm and the dash cluster module separately, this is how you catch someone altering the mileage display by changing the cluster module.

I would get it fixed... If you don't sell it, there may never be a problem... But if you trade it off, you'll likely get dinged pretty hard for odometer rollback. It'll likely get flagged via carfax or some other method. I'm guessing you could avoid charges, since you weren't responsible for it, but that's not a thing I'd want to have to explain and hope they believed me. On this one, I'd just be safe.

Your state may and probably does differ, but the odometer statement form for CA has a section to "explain" what the true mileage is in the event of a speedo/odo change or some other calamity or malfunction.

OK…so how do I get the actual mileage from the PCM & how can I get it in the dash module? I feel it needs fixing

Run a carfax on it and see if what the odo says is less than the last recorded mileage. If it is you will need to make sure you surpass that mileage before doing maintenance or inspection/registration at a shop.

I probably wouldn’t worry about it if it works out that way.

When the dealer changes out the module, they have to order it with the correct mileage programmed in, can't be changed in the field.
Dealer would either have to order a new module with the correct mileage, or send yours back to get the correct mileage programmed into it.
They do it that way to cut off the fraudulent players.

Ah! Now it's making sense. The dealer is wanting to take out the new module and record the mileage that I put on it, put my old module back in to get the mileage off of it, add the two together, order another new module with the combined mileage which would match the PCM, then put the new new module in without me putting more miles on the truck so the mileage shown will be within a few tenths of perfect.

Thanks! This makes the situation more clear.

There were a few past posts from owners who also noticed incorrect miles after this recall. It will be fixed but shouldn't have happened in the first place.

I agree. I don't know if the service department ordered it with the wrong mileage, the tech recorded the wrong mileage, or Ford programmed the incorrect mileage. Either way it's a big inconvenience. I have had two days down already and now they want it for a few more. I can do that but... they can't just give me a rental Escape or something, it's gotta be a truck with a hitch as I'm in the middle of hay and need something to tote around my hay equipment. My baler weighs 5400# and close to a grand of that is on the tongue.

They should be able to read the mileage off the pcm with their scan tool.
The way you say they want to do it seems like a lot of extra work.

Yes this is crazy. Even with forscan you can see the milage stored in the PCM, this is very easy for them to look up and the just order you the correct dash. None of that extra is needed. How does the service department not know this?

I’d have the dealer write you a formal letter with a statement of what occured, signed by the service manager and/or general manager. Put it away until you sell or trade the truck.
