CDL may not apply as long as the GVW stays under 26,001 lbs and he's not hauling someone else's property, just his own. Went down that road, spoke to the State Police Weighmaster and got that explanation.

Don't even need DOT numbers for my state.

Was going to suggest the same. OP might not even need a 4x4 (they didn't specify), but a brand new XLT with a 7.3 could be had for about $ 50k + ORC nowadays.

Aye. Plenty of "Customer states..." videos to back up that statement!

Man if you are towing that much you need something newer of any make/model. Been in business awhile and its ok to starve it but don’t put it at risk.

You really want a 10,000 gvwr diesel. That would be most 3/4 tons.

The best thing for you, in particular, in buying a new one is you get to 100% use it for its intended use. I would also consider a Ram 2500 Cummins for the best price possible (I read they have too much stock and wheeling and dealing). See if you can get it mid $50s 84 month financing.

If you absolutely need to starve it find a 6.2 Ford f250 and if you can swing a little more order an XL supercab longbed 6.8/4.30 f250 and see if you can swing 360 cams and $250 chrome package (just so your bumpers don’t rust and resell).

MSRP on an F250 XL regular cab long box with a 7.3 and the STX package which includes the 360° camera package is approximately $57k. With rebates and other deals you can likely get it down to or under $50k. This would be a good truck for OP. A diesel is going to make the price jump considerably, about $10k. I still contend that it could be worth it, and it's what I would personally do in his situation, but he's got to work with his budget.

I think the 7.3 XLT is a hair cheaper if you order it properly. For his use though I would go poverty package everything except 360 cameras and chrome bumpers, etc.

You can get an XL SCLB F250 6.7 4x4 in the low $60s MSRP. Same with a Ram 2500 quad cab 4x4 Cummins.

The only advantage with the Ram is you can probably find a base Cummins without chrome and the little 17” pizza cutters on a lot and offer $10-12k off or something. The Ford would be best ordered and try to get it around 6% below msrp maybe.

Thats really what he needs to get because he can get a long bed 2500 like that. Even if he gets a 200k mile diesel or gas for $25,000 that is one sneeze away from needing a motor. At 200k miles the gas and diesel hold about the same value, they are basically depreciated to nothing. Then a step above that will be the typical CCSB powerstroke with 50-75k miles that is around $45-50k.

Something like this (they have a few colors same price), tell them you want that price out the door and do 84 months financing.
