1996 Ranger
Seeing as how the 96 should be OBD-2 diagnostics, scan it for pending or set trouble code clues & post All code Numbers as they can help focus a trouble-shoot.
All that said lets think about this some more, remember it takes air, fuel & spark to make em run, so when it hot stalls & won't restart which one of those 3 is missing?
I've seen something as simple as a faulty gas cap not venting the tank & causing negative pressure as fuel is used that the fuel pump can't overcome cause a fuel starvation stall, so when it lays down & won't restart, open the gas cap to equalize tank pressure & see if it'll restart, if so, replace the gas cap with the specified Ford part.
If you don't have a code reader, or scan-tool to help in the trouble-shoot, when it stalls use your fuel pressure tester at the under hood fuel rail Schrader valve test port to test fuel pressure & your timing light to check for spark.
Might be helpful to know which engine this puppy has & if this problem began slowly over time or suddenly after some event?
Some initial thoughts for consideration, let us know how it goes.

When it does die and you try to start it, it sounds like it isn’t getting fuel. But as I said once it sits for a spell it will start back up. That being said, I do know the purge evaporator valve does throw a code. Will take it to parts store and get them to run diagnostic on and post codes, for further details.
Why do you think that you need a new coil pack? The EVAP system purge valve shouldn't cause the engine to die.
Good luck at the auto parts store.
