Can anyone explain the 4x4 switch in my 98 Expedition? I know 2wd and 4High & 4Low do, but what happens in AWD? Does it operate with the rear wheels till there is slippage then engage? In general bad conditions where should I be driving with AWD or 4High. This is my first truck that has an all wheel drive option. Any help would be appreciated.
The AWD option puts the truck into 4 wheel drive when there isn't an traction. 4high leaves the truck in 4 wheel drive all the time. It is more fuel efficient to put it in 2 wheel, but AWD is good for around town in the winter. I usually put mine in 4 high when driving in neighborhoods since it can be really slippery where I live. In bad conditions, leave it in AWD, but if you feel it constantly going into 4 wheel, just switch it over to 4 so you don't put at much wear on the transfer case.
On my 2000 EB, there is no 2WD option. There's A4WD, 4H and 4L. I understand what mistercmk is talking about - putting undue stress on the transfer case, but what other option do I have? Did Ford do anything (in general) to compensate for the inability to force the truck into 2WD?

Okay, is it supposed to go in and out of 4 wheel drive when in AWD? Is that why my dash lights keep switching from AWD to 4wd when I'm in the AWD mode?? I didn't know it switched in and out automatically?
