My power steering pump pulley is squeaking really bad whenever it is damp outside, and sometimes even when its really dry out, just happens whenever it wants to. I usually pop the hood and spray a little wd40 inside it and it goes away. Is there a way to remove the pulley and somehow lubricate the bearings or whatever is squeaking? Also, what would you reccomend me lubing it with? Thanks for any help!
I have found that it's the belts that make the racket "usually", and a bit of belt dressing helps for a while at least. Or it could be that your belts are just plain worn out. If you are sure that your WD-40 is not getting on the belts when you spray it, then guess it is your PS pump and may be time for a re-build. JFWIW, you need a special puller/installer to remove and install the PS pump pulley, so keep that in mind if you go for a re-built! Steve
NEVER put WD-40 or any other lubricant on belts! It destroys the belt and the pulleys will need to be cleaned and refurbished b4 you put another belt on.
Im not putting the wd40 or any other lubricants on the belts, I know better than that. No, Im putting it in the whole right in the middle of the pulley, where theres that bolt or whatever it is connecting the pump to the pulley. Thats whats squeeking, not the belt. Ive also tried packing grease in there without taking the pump off, and it only helps temporarely, and I end up going back to wd40. Do you guys have any ideas on how I could stop the squeek? Thanks!
i would say it's the shaft bearing. replace the pump. also auto zone will take the pully off and put it on the new pump for free. the pump goes for about $50
