another dual tank feed problem
about a week ago, it would not feed from the front tank. The fuel gage worked fine.
Today drove it and after about 1 mile it quit. Tried to switch to front tank. No feed from either tank, now... The interesting part is...
when it died the fuel gage went to Empty ( E) on both tanks.
Had to towed to Shop where they replaced The Fuel Tank Selector Valve/6 ports and the fuel pump relay. They said it was fixed. Next morning it started fine but I wanted to check the system.
After running on front tank about 5mim. I switched to rear tank. It ran fine. So I switched to back and forth a couple of times
It ran for about 30 seconds, then the gage droped to E and engine quit. No gas feed again... both tanks are about 1/2 full
Everyone seems stumped... Please help me... this is getting expensive
Does it shut down both the front and rear? If so, on the '86, there is a "Inertia switch" that feeds power straight from the starter mortor relay to the fuel pump relay. It is there to shut off the fuel in the case of an accident (fire prevention). It will shut down guages, fuel pump, and selector valve. Trace the Dark Blue wire from the starter relay (side opposite the starter cable), after the fuse link, it turns to Yellow. First thing it comes to is the "inerita switch" When switches start to go, they get hot and shut down, sounds like your problem. I could be wrong but I think the little light indicating front or rear tank selected should be out also. Good Luck!
A new developement... This afternoon the temperature warmed up to about 60 degree F. Thought I would see if it would start.
Guess what, gages came up and it started and ran just fine. When it failed to start, outside temperature was near 32 F... Hmmm water condensation in gas? Maybe, so went and bought some HEET for water in gas. Don't know if it will help or if that is the problem, But figured it wouldn't hurt.
So, I need the weather to cool down to freezing for the acid test
If it flunks the test, I know where to look next, the switch...
