Hi,
I have a 2001 supercab B3000 Dual Sport
I've recentley bought it from my dad and it's got 8300 miles on it.
It has a trailer hitch put on by Uhaul that looks pretty rugged, I'm going to look into it's rating.
So a buddy of mine has a boat up in Pennsylvania that he's willing to pay me to go get. I also would be able to borrow it and would get lots of fishing trips out of the deal. I'm not certian how much it weighs but it's a 21 foot boat that he has taken offshore so i'm pretty sure it's not tiny. I live in Gainesville, Florida. Not a short trip.
So my question, What should i do to help the towing capacity of my truck? It will be used fairly frequentley(weekends) to tow after this one trip.
I have hesitated to make modifications to this truck because it's still under warranty. I'm going to try to get more info on the tow weight of the boat this evening.
Be careful if the weight of the boat excedes the capacity of your truck it will void the warrenty. Your truck might pull it down the road but unless it is very light and you have 4x4 you will probably not be able to get it out of the ramp. Be careful about that. Just make sure the boat is under about 4000#s before you stick it in the water. Like I said it sucks not to be able to get the boat out because your truck will not pull it out.
I'm told the boat weighs 2500lbs. I have the 3.0 V6. Everythign seems ok, do you reccomend a transmission cooler? I'm going to get an oil change before I go with mobil 1.
Does the lift kit in my truck(factory) change the towing cappcity?
thanks,
rice
i would definitly run a tranny cooler when towing anything with an automatic, even if it doesnt realy need it, it's good to have that extra cooling taking place, overheating kills automatics, and you'll gain more fluid in circulation. i would change fluid/filter yearly also. (but thats just me ) the biggest thin i've found with towing and the ranger series is braking capacity. though my '93 seems better than my '88 was. i wouldnt think a lift kit would affect towing rating, since yours is factory, check your driver's door sticker/owners manual. if the trailer has its own braking system that would be a plus. (most do anymore)
