I can’t seem to find any 1970 grilles that are in good condition. Are these hard to find? What sort of price should I expect to pay for decent example? Thanks!
I dont see any at some of the regular places but I see a few on ebay. One that has busted inserts looks pretty straight from the pic for a 1970. You would have to look at it. Be careful of the ones that say 70-72. They are different. 70 was a one year only. They will all bolt up to the truck but you need the appropriate inserts. Im not sure if 70 inserts will screw into a 71-72 grille or the other way around but they definitely wont fit right.
I could never locate a good 70 grill surround. I ended up with a 71-72 then made a set of adapters to use 70 inserts. I painted the adapters and the mounting tabs flat black to match the core support so they are practically invisible.
To make the adapters, I used some 3/4x1/16 strapping. For each insert, 2 are C shaped and 2 are Z shaped. They are very easy to make. Just hold the grill insert in the opening and it's pretty obvious what to do. The 70 inserts are more shallow than the others so the adapters are needed to place the inserts at the right depth. There are 6 tabs on the grill but the 70 inserts only use 4.
