Question Exhaust

Have a 70 F-100 with a 390 and a 3 speed manual trans.
The truck came with 2 glasspacks on it connected by 2 individual pipes that use the 'donuts' type gaskets on the orig. exhaust manifold.
I would like to install headers and dual exhaust coming out straight aft under the rear bumper or possibly out behind each rear wheel as that is code around here in Jersey for inspection, otherwise they hammer you.

Problem is with the dizzying array of muffler choices I am not having fun figuring out what to do.

I also would like to tone down the noise as the glass packs are very loud when you accelerate, but I don't want to sacrifice performance either.

I found only one pair of headers that are actually listed for this truck, Doug Thorley THY-203, so if any ideas, thoughts, or experience, will greatly appreciate.

The auto parts guy here has a stock Y-pipe and single exhaust setup that was supposedly made for these F-100's but it will most definitely kill horsepower.

On a budget ......so I can't afford fancy SS pipes and such......
Thanks in advance.

Hi linux, try a search on headers in the FE forum, there's more than one to choose from.

Thanks guys.
No Compredo!
I don't know what you (BB) mean by searching the FE forum.
You mean search on this forum in the "Parts Search" box?
I tried that with bad results. I new to all this and not doing to good navigating or understanding your acronyms and abbreviations yet.
Thanks again,
Pardon my ineptitude.....
Having a bad week here..............
J.

It's always a trade off between h.p. and noise. I just had a complete dual exhaust system made up for my truck when I changed from a 240 to a 360. I told the shop that I wanted good h.p. but "fairly quiet". My truck now sounds like a buba truck. I guess quiet is subjective. It certainly is better than when I drove it all the way to town with just the manifolds. Had to wear hearing protectors and it was still loud. Be real clear how you want the truck to sound.

Sorry about that J, I meant search the FE V8 engine forum to find threads about headers for your engine. Use the search at the top of the page where the row of blue buttons are.

But off the top of my head, there’s Hooker, Hedman, DynoMax, FPA, Sanderson and more I’m sure, what seems to be the problem?

Thanks guys...........I appreciate the honesty.......
And I always love reading all the funny stuff...
Made my day......

Thanks Barry.........I was just having brain cramps......
I understand what you were telling me know....
Was just getting frustrated with things here, personal stuff, and it was creeping into everything....

I'll take a look see.........

I did find some 50 series on the Flowmaster web site that are for early muscle and or big block engines which I think the 390 qualifies for....there not cheap though.....I think they want 174.95 or so for one. So I need 2 if I'm going to go to a "true" dual exhaust setup and I just don't have the cash for that now as I'm out of work right now. Just want to do the dual thing as economical as possible without having to compromise by putting some junk system on that just gonna make me feel bad and burn up soon also.........Talk to ya later,
Jay.

Linux,
Re headers, be prepared as they are a huge pain in the rear. Hard to get on, hard to get off, burn up starter motors, prone to leak and so on (I have a set, by the way, on my 67). Good Luck.

Thanks MuddinMan, that's what their web says anyway....
I'm sure their probably cheaper if I get them locally......
Thanks for heads up Jor........
I put headers on a new 80 f-150 w/ a 302 I bought 23 years ago....I guess it was simple cause the damn thing was new.......ran it in the mud with no muffs and nearly blew my eardrums out....
It's amazing how fast your foot comes off the accelerator without even having to think about it.......it sure hurt! (lol) Burning starters? I guess the heat, I plan on wrapping them with asbestos type cloth tape I've used in boiler rooms.

Yo boggity24,
I don't think you outright sell things like that on the forum.
Check the site guidlines.
These things are pretty cheap, I think around 16 bucks at AutoZone parts store.
Shipping would cost more probably.
Check e-bay, you might find something there.
Thanks for asking though.
Jay.

Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers are the quietest and best flowing, they are the next best thing to no muffler as in lack of restriction. Much better than Flowmaster as they don't make that droning and reverberation.

most high performance mufflers flow almost as good as open exhaust. I don't think it's fair to say that noise and performance are a trade-off until you get up in the much higher HP range.

Find a performance muffler that is configured the way you want (center in/out or staggered) at the price you want. Search Jeg's and Summit to find a lot of options.
