2016 F-250 A/C Issues. Please Help

A/C Question-

2016 F-250 6.2 CC 4x4. This truck normally freezes me out. I live in northern Indiana. It has been very humid the last couple months. Have noticed the a/c just has not been getting the job done. Have to run it on max a/c and recirculate and even then it still just sit struggling to stay cold. If I turn off max a/c it immediately starts getting warm and humid in the cab. We just pulled the camper 5 hrs and it was getting worse all the way there. Got to the campground and the truck sat idling for the dogs while I got the camper set up. I climbed back in and was pelted with little ice chunks from the vents. So I am guessing that the Freon is low.

Since I am out of town I bought one of those little cans of Freon and hose. I didn’t buy the one with the stop leak as I don’t want to gum anything up.

Am I gonna hurt anything if I add a small can to the system, to try and cool it down a little?

Is the AC Compressor clutch continually going on/off? How is airflow out the vents? (possibly evaporator related too)

Have you checked the low-side pressure with a gauge (or if one came with your refill) with Engine On / AC full blast? What's it reading? (also what temp is it outside?)

I've had success adding 1/4-1/2 bottle when seeing below range - low-side readings and compressor clutch going on/off continually. Immediately fixed and going on 2 years still cold with low side pressures still in range. (both my '03 truck and daughters '01 Jeep)

Compressor is coming on and staying on. Max A/C on recirculate. Temp was around 85 degrees and humid. When I hooked up the guage it was at the very bottom of the “green” level. I went ahead and added I can. Truck currently is blowing plenty cold now even without it being on max a/c or recirculate. We will see what happens. I hope this was the fix but only time will tell.

In my experience those cans are a 'short term' solution, great for when you're on the road, but after an amount of time passes you'll likely see the issue return.

What it means is that there is a slow leak in the system somewhere, and the only way you're likely to find it is to have a shop put some of the UV dye in it and try to find it. Most people don't have the ability to do that themselves.

Now, I'm not saying go have it serviced right away - you might go a few years before needing another can, you might need another can in a year, it's hard to say. And the cans are cheap compared to system repairs, so a few cans over a few years isn't that bad of a deal. What I am saying is, be aware that if the leak gets too bad, even a can with stop leak won't be enough and you'll need to get it serviced.

Fair enough. I totally understand there is probably an issue somewhere to be replaced. I am sure I could get the dye kit and do that part. But unfortunately I don’t have the knowledge or tools to reclaim and vacuum down the system. I am pretty sure my father in law has a big can of r-134a so I will have to look into the rest. Would still probably be too much to invest in. I just hate taking my truck in for service. You just can’t trust anybody anymore now days.
