4R70W

I am swapping a 4r70w from 2001 f159sc 4.6l 4x4 (recently rebuilt) into a 2003 f150crewcab 5.4l 4x4. The 2003 was early production so the trans in it has single speed sensor like my 2001. It just has no 3rd gear. Time to shift and rpms take off and truck doesn't. Any bugaboos I should be aware of? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

IIRC, the 4R70W is a 4x2 trans and the 4x4 trans is an E4OD for that year span. Non interchangeable.

4R70W and E40D are totally different transmissions. There are a whole host of reason why it’s not shifting, will need to have a transmission pressure gauge to check line pressure.

Sounds like people are saying that the "2001 f159sc 4.6l 4x4" is either not a 4x4 or that it is and the transmission is not a 4R70W. Probably need to figure that part out pretty quick.

You've got a transmission swap going on! That's a big job.

First, congrats on the rebuild. Now, let's tackle the issues. Since both trucks have single-speed sensors, that's a good start.

For the 3rd gear problem, I'd suggest checking the transmission computer calibration, wiring harness differences, solenoid pack compatibility, and torque converter compatibility with the 5.4L engine.

Also, ensure the transmission mounts and brackets are compatible. You might need to fabricate or modify some brackets to fit properly.

Lastly, test the transmission thoroughly before putting the truck back on the road.

Good luck, and let me know if you need more help!
