Get some fresh bits. Start small to guide the larger ones. Hold the rivet with needle nosed pliers. They’re only aluminum so they should pop right out easily. I just did this last week.
i'll try a different brand bit then. i've never had an issue with drilling them before, these just seem extra tough for some reason, even with the new bits.
I cut the head off of mine with a small cutoff wheel in a dremel tool.
There's risk of damaging the plastic trim mounting piece, but if you're trying to remove the rivets then you are likely replacing those anyway.
When I drilled mine out, they were definitely aluminum, and based on how brittle the plastic was I’m also assuming they were original.
I don’t want to speculate without seeing it, but I’m going to guess someone replaced yours at some point with a stainless steel rivet or something harder. Even the dullest of old bits would make quick work of aluminum.

yeah, these defiantly aren't aluminum, stainless was my guess too.
