Is there a way to add a switch to the fan clutch so that when I am pulling a load up a grade in 100 degree temperatures so that I can engage the fan clutch full time. Then when I am over the grade I can switch it back to auto. The problem I am having is the fan clutch comes on when I am 3/4 on the gage. Then it has a hard time bringing the temp back down. Normally runs 1/2 on gage in same conditions but not towing 20,000 lbs.
Truck info?
Most super duty’s are clutch driven, by a mechanical clutch. No way to really override that electronically.
And as far as when I looked into it for my 03, no electronic fan was powerful enough to keep up and cool the engine under load.
I would see if there was an accessory electronic cooling fan to maybe complement your main fan??
This.
I've read here and there about people adding an auxiliary electric fan to help with cooling on older trucks. I think a few may have had them factory? Don't quote me on that though, it may not have been Ford that did that.
If you've never serviced the cooling system, now might be a good time to have a flush done. It may help.
It would be good to know what truck and motor package you have. I know for a fact that there is a mod for the 6.0 to do this very thing. Under normal circumstances on the 6.0 the fan is supplied 12v and the pcm varies the ground depending on inputs from coolant temps, AC on, monitored fan speed, etc. The mod taps into the ground wire going to the fan and adds a switch that grounds the fan and causes it to go into full lock up. Most of the 6.0 guys use the extra upfitter switches to accomplish this.
