Hi guys, I just picked up a '96 F-250 project truck. Since I'm digging into this truck, what are some of the know problem area I need to check out?
Tried to load some pics, but no-go.
Welcome to FTE.
Any plans for it? What do you use it for?
Have a real good look over the frame before you get too deep. Behind the rear leaf spring hangar, you need to drop the aft fuel tank or pull the box off to look properly. Other areas you’ll just have to address as you get to them, depending on what you get into with it.
No quad shock option on the 250/350.
Post up some pictures, you should be able to. Click on this icon - see pic below.
My '95 F250 ext cab long bed has the handling package as well, as verified by the Marti report https://www.martiauto.com/martireports.cfm that takes information right off the factory invoice.. My previous '97 F250HD did NOT have sway bars at all - not even a front bar. The '95 (with handling package) has sway bars front and rear!
As for plans, I may get a repaint (the bed is red - so yeah, that will be done). It also needs tires, so that's on the list. Long term plans include a rear limited slip diff, and a 2.5" lift kit. I also prefer manual hubs vs the automatic ones as I've had issues in the past with auto hubs. I will give these a fair try before I start judging how well they function. I really like the stock look of these old trucks, so I'm going to keep things factory looking, other than a mild lift. A tall, government "fleet" vehicle with narrow wheels & tires is the look I'm after. Later on I may do some engine modifications, but it runs great now.
It also has manual window cranks - which I like, plus the vent windows.
Regarding usage, I'm not planning on doing a lot of recreational off roading. The area where I live is kind of hilly, and you will get stuck in a 2wd in snow. I put a locking differential in my FWD Jetta. With proper winter tires, it will climb a steep ice covered driveway or road no problem. I'm a big fan of locking diffs. I also have a 4wd VW van with front and rear lockers.
Currently, the bed it off. I'm planning on a thorough cleaning of the gas tanks & frame, along with an application of Waxoyl undercoating. Rust prevention is my primary goal. The AC needs some attention too.
Same color mine was originally. Look forward to the updates as you go.
Looks like someone has already gone over the frame and cleaned it up, replaced front leaf hangar, muffler, and coated it with something. The rear cab corners on these have a sprayed in foam that is open on the bottom and likes to absorb water. Front does too, but difficult to access. I pulled the rear foam out, and installed a cover, then soaked it down inside with rust inhibitor.
Also looks like a frame repair has been done. I’d have a good look over that.
So couple of issues. I'm having a hard time shifting it into first while it's running. I can only get it in first gear with the engine off. Also, the clutch pedal doesn't return all the way.
I want to try to bleed it first. I found this video.
