Something went boom on my way home from work. Rotational grinding growling noise on deceleration. Steady throttle/accel not to bad. Assuming transmission internal. Need to install my hoist that I just moved to the other end of the shop and get it up to take a look. Once I drain the oil I will pull it out to check clutch and throw out bearing.
What is the difference between the 5.4 and 7.3 zf6 aside from the housing? Looking at going thru it myself instead of buying another rebuild. I saw a 5.4 2wd zf6 for sale locally if I need a bunch of hard parts.
Anyway miss you all. Off to fire up the hammer drill and put in some anchors.......
No idea on what differences there may be other than ratios and how much torque it is rated for. Diesels generate 500 ft lb torque, gassers a whole lot less. I don't think you will find any similarities on the internal gears, etc. between the two.
Quoted from Wikipedia: The gasoline version of the ZF6 and ZF5 is known to have poor casting issues, especially around the transmission mounts. This can lead to the mounting ears breaking off. Other issues include the older version of the shift fork not being as strong as the updated variant.
Here's where I found it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZF_S6-650_transmission
I think he wants to know if the internals are the same and will swap into his case. That's a good question. I wonder if it has the smaller 7.3 input shaft end or the larger 6.0/6.4 end. That would end any hopes of an easier fix if it was the wrong size pilot.
Yes I'm talking internals. Didn't get a chance to pull it out until last night. Family vacation came first. Input shaft is loose. Furthest forward set of years I can see through the PTO cover plate has damage.
Trying to figure out if I can get the one local from a 5.4 and swap the front half of my case to it. Probably going to be 2 weeks till I can pull it apart to diagnose further. I've been reading through some rebuild threads. Really wish I would have kept the one I sent back for a core and didn't get paid for when I bought this one a few years ago....... It was a used one that I bought and had put in to get home shifted great but wouldn't stay in one of the gears. And also had my original "lost" by the shop that did the work when I was stranded.
