Can somebody please send me a picture showing the hole in the door and the hole in the cab the speakers are supposed to run through? The PO took the old speakers with them and did something absurd to get the cables into the door. I can only locate 1 hole on the cab side thats kinda tucked way up in their and 1 hole in the door but the off set/elevation distance between the 2 seems absurd to me, there would be WAY too much cable floating in the wind.
If anyone has any suggestions on brands for the little rain guard speaker things I would also appreciate it, can't seem to find any online, maybe I'll cover the back with an old butter tub or something.
Well, the cab has a higher hole place than the door does, so any rain / wash water follows away from the cab and into the door, where it will drain harmlessly. I can show pics where mine are, but stock is higher up ... but I didn't know that in 1980s. Drivers door, you can see the hinges, I was swapping fenders that day.
My '77 only has dimples (no actual holes). in the jambs as it only had the dash mounted speaker stock. I did it like I had always ... I drilled where was safe and that I could reach with the drill, and I used grommets.
Holy crap that seems crazy to me, I guessed that was the case but I had to ask for a sanity check. I'm pretty sure most cars and trucks I've worked on they were always relatively closer together with a little bit of that black smurf tubing.
If the holes are at the same level, if enough to allow an open door, it has a tendency to be scrunched up too ... is my thought. Staggering them allows more room for when the door is shut ... I think.
I know I've seen pictures posted here of what you seek.
Silver truck, there is a dimple in the cab wall where to drill.
Pretty sure tape measure is setting on top of door hinge. Cab side.
Cab side.
3/4 dia hole, cab side.
Again I believe the tape is on top of door hinge, different truck. Cab side.
Door side hole.
1" dia in door. OEM wire harness and rubber grommet.
Door side.
This is the passenger side door hole.
You should have access to the hole from up under the dash (on each side) And pop out the side wall panel up high rubber plug. Also there is the door open push switch wiring in there, so go fishing carefully.
Ok thats way different than what I'm seeing. I'm guessing this truck must not have originally came with a radio cause I do not believe have those holes which would make what the previous owner make more sense but still not ok. The speaker holes are cutout and those look factory though.
As you can see from the first photo, when I got the girl she had a speaker wire coming out of the hole on the right, running under the door seal and through the hole in the door. The passenger side they went through the door seal. Nothing protecting the wires.
Probably gonna plug those lower holes and go up high like the factory, seems easier that way.
May be the one spot on the truck I use small chunks of smurf.
Recently as I replaced doors, fenders, etc .... there came the day to put the wires back for my door speakers. I drilled new holes in my new doors, but reused the holes in the body. I used a coat hanger wire with a tight hook on one end to push from the jamb, bending as I did, until I could feel it through the big opening above the kick panel under the dash, then I attached a string with loop to it and pulled the string through. Then I secured wire to the string's other end and pulled it through too, then I put grommets on the wire and pushed them in place from the door jamb. This method has served me well since my first install in the '70s.
My truck did not have door speakers from the factory, so I used a cheap 90 right angle drill attachment and a short drill bit to for the holes in the door and jamb. I just used some grommets from a kit I have. So far no issues going on about 6 years.
