I have a 2001 f250 xlt lariat "Platium Addition" that I bought new.
It has the V10 crewcab 4x4 short box. The option included special 2 tone silver and platium paint, platium enbossed leather bucket seats, a visor, nerf bars, special door panels, and a full chrome front bumper (no plastic cover on the top).
Does anyone know how many of these were built? I have only seen 3 since I have had it.
I bought a Platinum model, too, Brad. Mine has the 5.4 V8 (and I had to look around a bit to find that engine instead of the V10 or diesel).
Couldn't tell where you're at, but I bought mine in New Braunfels, TX. There were two on the lot at the time and another in San Marcos, TX.
Driving around San Antonio and the Hill Country of Texas, I generally see 3-4 other Platinums a month. My understanding is that the model was offered by Ford primarily in the Southwest as a special edition in '01 only. I still get lots of compliments on what a great looking truck it is. I've added Ranch Hand bumpers to both ends of mine.
Although I don't have a Platinum edition, I did put the all chrome bumper on my truck, after seeing it in an online Ford truck ad. I did it to eliminate the tall grass getting caught in the plastic cover while driving in the field, plus I liked the unique look.
Since I put it on over a year ago I have never seen a Super Duty with that trim package in my area of Pennsylvania. As a matter of fact it has become second nature for me to check out every SD I pass looking for it. So, I think pcorbin is correct that it's a regional thing.
There's got to be at least 10 Platnium Edition SD's down here in Corpus Christi, TX. I always thought the Plat. Edition was CC, short bed, PSD only. . .I guess not! Good looking trucks, there's one down here thats lifted with 35's on the stock 'Lariet' wheels that looks superb!
If you guys with this edition have any pix, how about posting them on this thread. I have never seen one of these before. Sounds like an a great looking truck.
I have seen several but they have been scattered through out the TX, Ark and LA areas. I did also see 2 that I can recall in AZ and only one here in central PA with TX Tags. They do have a unique look to them.
Had one I just traded in. Here in Dallas, TX. there are a ton of 'em. If I remember correctly they could only be ordered by dealers in Texas and Oklahoma. Always turned heads in other states. Had one guy in Florida try to buy it out from under me.
Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but the Platinum edition was available everywhere to the best of my knowledge.
I see them regularly up here in Calgary, AB, Canada.
I've seen a few in the Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming on my travels there a couple years back too.
It was an option package just like the Lariat, I don't think the number built was limited. You wanted it, you got it. I think the reason you don't see that many of them is that they were VERY pricey, and I would guess that most dealers passed on them, kept the numbers low, or in most cases, they were special ordered.
1956MarkII might be able to give us the details if he stops by.
Nice trucks though, I almost bought a used one myself before I bought the one in my sig. He just wanted too much money for it.
You're right. A little searching on this site turns up a press release that says "primarily available in the southwest". But that probably means little.
I am from Calgary also, Looks like Texas, P.A. and Calgary have them so far! The numbers made would be interesting. One dealer told me that Ford didn't make them and that it was a dealer specific custom option. what an idiot! Glad to hear other think they are cool too, I have had lots of people and other lariat S.D. guys stop me for a look. I didn't think $2200 more was that bad for the option. Specially $2200 CANADIAN IN 2001! hahahahahahahahaha.
I've seen only two other Platinum Editions out here in northern california besides my own. I did buy mine on ebay from texas and I love it!! A lot people give me compliments all the time, and that this is really an unusual truck. This one did come with the diesel and I'm glad of that, it sure is joy to drive!!
