351W Questions

I'm pretty new to this Ford stuff, I'm thinking about picking up a spare 351 to freshen up so when my high mileage 1990 F250 gives up I'll be ready to swap. My question is what year 351 motors will work for me? I realize that my heads have special ports for the smog stuff, but are all short blocks basically the same? I'm concerned about hooking up all the sensors and all that fun stuff.

Well you have a efi 351 Winsor. Anything in the late 80's with efi will definatly work. Otherwise any 351 winsor will work, as long as you get your efi stuff and put it on that motor.

Thanks 78fordman, That's what I needed to know. I just missed out on a good runner from a late 70's LTD. I have lots of buddies in the demolition derby racing, so finding a good block to start with should be pretty easy.

i am not too sure on the 90 app, but my 84 block had to be modified to keep the knock sens, some gus just let it hang, and my block didnt have the place the tube went in on the driver side i had to modify the pan using a patch from a double sump with the screw in type dipstick. thats bout it

I'll have to look into that knock sensor. I've heard people talk about it, but to be honest I'm not even sure where it's located on my truck. My 90 has 170,000 on it and I'm noticing some blow by and noisy lifters and stuff. Just thought it would be nice to have at least a fresh shortblock ready to reduce the down time on a swap.
