You disconnect the wire from the wire at the bottom of the box and pull it out of the top.

To put the wire back in you'll have to run a piece of mechanics wire up from the bottom and tape to the horn wire and pull it back down, as there is a 6" long pipe at the bottom end that you won't be able to fish the wire from the top

Ok. Went to pull the wheel and I mushroomed out the top of the shaft just a tiny bit and of course the steering wheel didn't budge.

I am pretty sure I can fix it with a Tap but don't know the size. Can anyone tell me what size tap I need?

Thanks again

I did the same. Use a piece of 3/8" steel with a hole drilled in it to locate the point of your puller. Then after getting wheel off you can address the threads better. I think I borrowed the correct die but I can't remember the size. Problem with mine was the tube was so messed up I couldn't get the die to start. I just kept working at it with thread files until I could get die to engage- then tighten/loosen back and forth till it finally started. My nut and wheel is back on and works fine- don't tighten it super tight and use anti seize. I found there are thread dies made that come apart like the holder for a line flare tool. I couldn't get one but I think that would work great. Just go further up on the shaft to undamaged threads, clamp down and unscrew... Next time you take off wheel leave nut on flush with top of tube and use the plate until it pops loose. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

A normal die may be difficult to clock appropriately over the mushroomed end. You will want an axle thread chaser like this:

It splits so you can attach and clock it to the good threads below the mushroomed end, and then chase it "backwards" out over the mushroom reforming the threads.

The thread is 5/8"-18.

Here are a few options:

Prior to using the puller, I loosen the nut to be flush with the top of the shaft so not to mushroom the shaft.

too late now but for future reference

Die Threads should be 5/8x18

Thanks all. Wheel is off. I am going to buy one of those axle thread chasers as buying one die is probably close to the same price. In the mean time I can start restoring the steering wheel if I can find the PC7 I bought!

UPDATE:

Purchased the tool and fixed the threads. Thanks for the great solution!

It had to be done in steps meaning the clamping force had to start off being a little loose to start to cut the threads back and the tool backed all the off the threads. Then each subsequent time the clamping force was increased until it came through with the clamp fully tightened. Took about 8 passes to get it done.

Now I have to start repairing the steering wheel. I was never able to find where I put the PC7 I bought so just ordered some more yesterday.
