Anyone ever rebuild the factory LSD on a Sterling 10.5 rear axel?
Since I took my old diff off I've been been kicking the idea of taking the old LSD off and tearing it apart and installing new clutches and maybe add one or 2 more clutches if possible.
Will I be wasting my time, with ill results or maybe worth it?
I did not have a factory LSD in my Sterling when I rebuilt it but I can tell you having some sort of traction-enhancing differential is definitely worth it. Since you already have the LSD I say rebuild it. It won't be more expensive than buying a whole new TrueTrac or locker.

can't speak for the sterling, but for every lsd I have rebuilt (mada/nissan/toyota) you were able to order oversized separator plates that were a couple of thousands thicker to make up for case wear, so you took one that was in good shape and then replaced all the friction plates, and the separator plates, and one of them you put in an oversized plate and it makes the LSD a little "grabbier" it actually makes its engagement slightly faster and will carry more torque with less slippage.

Depends on who you ask really. I plan on rebuilding mine when I have some time as it’s cheaper than a trutrac but others will say the stock LSD is garbage and don’t waste money on it. I’ve read that adding more clutches gave good benefits to other people but I personally haven’t done it.
The only info I have about the LSD is 1) the OEM bias is really low, and 2) I bought a 08 LSD axle with a supposedly 50k miles on. The unit might have 70k on it now, and it's a one wheel wonder.
I priced out the rebuild kit for my LSD a few months back and minus bearing the cost was about $250 for the clutch plates and shims. When I add in my time I figured I would be better off doing a Truetrac.

that is why I went TruTrac,
plus, TruTrac will actually lock up, the LSD won't.
had one of those, don't like the way they work, makes life very Dangerous on sheet ice.

Where were you look at? Last time I looked it was around $170 for the ford part and you could get it from Tasca ford for $110 or so.
