AC relay jump

2001 Lariat
The compressor was not engaging, replaced the relay and still no go.
But, when I jumped it, the compressor kicks on.
Tried a few relays both old and new, still the compressor only works when jumped.

Any thoughts?
All help is appreciated.

Phil

Time to look at what is supposed to make the relay engage. That would be the two pressure switches and the PCM, among things.

See HVAC FAQs, link is in my signature, to get started.

Added some refrigerant, now the compressor cycles on and off.
But, it's still blowing hot air.
Thought maybe it could be the blend door stuck.
When turning the **** slowly, you can hear it moving.
Not sure what to do or try next.

If adding "some" refrigerant caused it to cycle, it was nearly out of refrigerant. That means a leak.

You need to find the leak, repair it, properly vacuum the system and then recharge by accurate weight.

"Some" was a can.
It's obvious that you know how these things work.
If I knew how to find a leak, repair it, vacuum the system and recharge it, I probably would not
have sought out help.

I do not appreciate being talked down to.

He could have just said "take it to a professional".

Watch some videos. Here's a good one.

If you think that being told what you need to hear and must know is being "talked down to", then your prospects in many things, including fixing your AC system, are very, very poor.

Good luck.

Oh, if this is above your skill and knowledge level, and take it to a professional for repair.

Of course it's above my skill level.
Why else would I have come here for help?

This is a 2001 Lariat with 230,000 miles.
A professional would cost more than the truck is worth.

Any fairly good shop could probably diagnose it and give an estimate for nothing or a small fee. AC systems are complex to work on tor the average home mechanics but the pros have specialized tools that make it easy. Make sure to tell him about the stuff from the can though so he knows it had leaked quite a bit.
