2010 FX4 5.4 3v?
Blessings,
Mike
When the engine hot and idling poorly, I could just punch the gas pedal to raise the RPM and hence the oil pressure and the engine would return to a normal idle.
The timing repairs required both rebuild of the VVT timing (tensioners, timing chain, rollers, control valve) and replacement of the oil pump with a higher pressure, higher volume oil pump. In addition, because the prior owner had neglected the repair when the behavior started, then the additional cost of a cam shaft replacement. Cost was around $7100 at the Ford dealership.
I did not experience any severe loss of power as you describe. The engine would snap out of it quickly by just reving the engine at idle when coming to a stop at an intersection to help avoid the cam phasor issues.
if the symptoms of the cam phasor (VVT) aren’t worse at hot engine temperature then I might expect the MAF sensor or something of that nature that affects the gas/air mixture to be the source of the symptoms you describe. If the cam phasor problem exists, one had better get it fixed as it could destroy your engine.
The oil pump may not be getting clogged full of tensioner and guide plastic just yet, so the chains may stay somewhat tight. Can phasers won’t start clacking until oil pressure drops below 20 PSI, I believe. No, the dash gauge won’t tell you that as it’s fake. As mentioned above, the oil pump isn’t all that great, so even a healthy 5.4 may chew up followers on the passenger side where the oil reaches last.
That being said, you may get plenty of soft misfires that will eat those cat converters alive in the meantime.
