I have a 2003 F250 super duty 10000 miles now. Auto trans. seems to be shifting oddly. If I lift my foot from the foot pedal while in OD, it shifts back into drive and then into OD. While driving in town it seems that the rpms are always running to high. On cold mornings ( 35 degrees or lower ) I will drive 2 miles at 55 mph before it shifts into OD. It shifts when the trans. oil gauge begins to climb. Also the muffler sounds kind of wimpy. Thanks
I have the exact same problem. I was told by the dealership that the truck's computer controls the transmission. It is programmed to shift hard when cold. The trans will shift properly when hot or warmed up. I have the same problem when hot or cold. The trans. will shift poorly hot or cold. I think the engine is coming apart on some mornings and/or slides into gears when hot.It rides like a crappy shift kit in my trans. Also I have 5k miles on my 2003 f250 xcab long bed.5.4 ,auto o/d ,with a flowmaster /dual rear exhaust. It sounds great for those younger race truck guys.

I doubt that's OD that its shifting in and out of. Lifting off the throttle will cancel the torque converter clutch. It will re-engage when you step back on the throttle. To verify this, compare that to hitting the OD cancel button on the shifter. _That_ is 3rd instead of OD.
As for not shifting into OD until its warm on cold mornings, its probably also the converter clutch. The computer will not engage the torque converter's clutch until the motor starts to warm up. Again, while driving along at 55 waiting to see if it will shift into OD, hit the OD cancel button on the shifter, if it downshifts, you were in OD and its the conveter clutch that you are waiting on.
