Engine rebuild

I have a '91 F-150 302 w/ E4OD tranny @193,000 miles. It is rattling and knocking on a regular basis now and I feel the need to rebuild. I plan on getting a motor from a local u-pull-it junkyard and building in my garage. I have never done a project this big before and I need some helpful hints. I use the truck for everyday driving and construction work. What type pistons, cam, heads should I use? Also, would it be worth it to change out to MAF or get a donor truck that is already MAF and swap out engine and computer?

Any and all help/suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Well, what is important to you? Do you just want it to run like new again, or do you need more power out of it? Also, how much do you want to put into it? If the sky's the limit and you want to be able to drag a mustang, there are a lot of things you could do, but if you just want a solid running truck it's a lot easier and cheaper.

I would like to have slightly more power/torque, but don't need to drag race. I was wondering about a straight swap of a 351W. What extra work am I getting into by doing this? As far as money goes, there is a limit. I can do this build up over time and budget accordingly.

I JUST BULIT A NEW 302 5.0 AND I BULIT TO TO DRAG IT WITH THE MUSTANG THE ENGINE WORK THE BLOCK, THE HEADS AND IF YOU HAVE TO BORE IT WAS AROUND $600.00 BUT WHEN I GOT DONE THERE SITS $ 3,800.00 OF COLD HARD SPEED. FOR WHAT YOU NEED STOCK PARTS OR GOOD ENOUGH DISH PISITONS, LOW RV CAM, 351 W OR 351M WOULD BE A GOOD CHOICE. GET A HAYNES BOOK READ IT AND TAKE YOUR TIME

How radical do you want to go with the motor? If only a little better than stock then keep the speed density, it can take you as far as you want to go. Other than work, what do you want to use the truck for? What are your goals? Later

For now I will use the truck mainly for construction with the occassional pulling of trailer and then for regular round town driving. Just curious of which way to go as for as looking for a junkyard motor to start with. Do I keep with a truck motor or can I go with a 5.0 HO from a Mustang? Can I go with the HO and not convert to MAF? I plan on using under-drive pulleys, electric fan, and convert to dual exhaust to try to free up a little more power from the build. Also off the subject, I have bigger tires (31 inch) than stock. Would it be better to change rear-end gear from 3.55 to 3.73 and what about changing to a posi or limited slip rear? Thanks for the info.

Bigger tires and lower gearing is always a good thing. YOu can use a HO motor with your speed density electronics, you just have to keep the firing order the same as the HO and none HO have different firing orders, otherwise it will work. If you can find a complete maf motor then swap it all over, I don't know the details but ask, someone will. Either way good luck

What year did Ford start with MAF in trucks? I know the Mustang changed in 89. Will the computer from the mustang work in the truck or will I need to get the AOD tranny also? Which tranny is better for a truck, E4OD or AOD?

For real if you just need stock by a long block. I have just gotten my block and heads done with machine work, it was $900. I would not go this way if I just wanted stock.
