#55 Jets is pretty lean for fuel. That is not the problem. The problem is it's a BUS and it's underpowered. You probably have your foot in it to go anywhere. That's the problem.

As for dist., sorry no help here.

Ird56, I thought you traded thay behemoth for a caddy engine and tranny.
Most school buses get 7-8 mpg reguardless of conditions.

yellow beast

it looks like the trade may not go thru so i was asking questions on what to do just in case .also since the bus gets 3-4 how much better should the truck get with the bus motor and trans with 3.90 gears. im trying to find a dana 60 with 3.33 to 3.54 gears to get the best mileage and with the governor being non adjustable will i be still be limited to 68 mph .you know how most truck drivers are if your smaller than them or slower than them run them over at least thats the way it is where i live

The 3.33 gears are only aftermarket for a dana 60 but a 61 is very similar and has the taller gears. Why don't you try to ditch all that governor stuff and just put a carb and dist, off a 352 or 360. I am not sure if the distributors interchange but you could pull it out and compare. I would almost bet that allison is robbing enough horsepower to account for some of the mileage loss. Even a C6 can rob 25 horsepower, or more.

what is a 61

is the 61 a 8 hole rear end im asking because ive never heard of it . the holley carb on the bus is basicly the same as the holley that came off my 390 it just has two more vacuum ports . unfortunatly the only dist that fits also fits the 361 and the 391 the hole in the manifold is too big for a fe dist. im trying to find someone who knows how to adjust it .there is a plug on the side of the dist i dont know if thats where to adjust it i dont want to break anything im probably being too cauthius .the motorcraft code is d4te-aha-a-7e23.the holley #list -5817-1.i know i ask a lot of questions but ive had gm for too long .i dont know ford very well
thank you for your help

I haven't actually ran across a Dana 61. I just read that it was the same basic thing as a 60 but in the newer pickups and specifically for the taller gears.
If a different manifold is required to use a pickup dist then maybe you should try it.

The hole inside the engine is also bigger for the FT dist. shaft where the gear goes on. Ford still sells a bushing to sleeve down that hole to the FE size, I used to have that pn, will find if if you need it. Will also try to find some info on that FT dist.

Here it is, C4TZ-12367-A

On the dist, remove the plug and you should see an adjusting nut inside. You may have to bump the engine over for the nut to line-up with the hole. Backing the nut out should increase the speed. If it doesn't turn I wouldn't force it 'cause if it breaks off you'll be looking at a new dist.

Was just thinking (sorry for being so scatter-brained)

An FE manifold won't match up correctly to the FT heads you got, the exhaust heat crossover is completely different along with the water neck and water pump plumbing.

governer adjustment

i found the adjustment and i found the right direction now the bus runs about 74 mph and up the hills with the pedal to the floor it runs 50 to 55 and the allison didnt shift down i think thats a big improvement by the way the direction is turn it in. i turned it in all the way now i have to find a cheap tach to find the max rpm
thank you

Thanks for the update mike. I wasn't exactly sure which way to turn it, all I had were exploded diagrams and was taking an educated guess on the direction, oh well.

If the engine will turn 4000 that should be plenty of rpm to get you a speeding ticket with even a 4.10 gear in your pickup. With a 4.10 and 31 inch tires you would be turning about 2700 at 60 if my calculations are correct.
