I have a recently rebuilt 302 in my 54 f-100. It has about 2000 m iles on it. I put a Comp 260H cam in it, weiand intake, autolite 4100 carb, and comp springs. Recently, noticed a noisey valve tap getting louder. Pulled the valve covers. One of my lifters must of callopsed, cause I have 1/4" play in one of my rockers. The pushrod, rocker arm, stud, all check out ok. Never seen this before?
I had a lifter colapse on my 69 f 250. It had a very well worn 360, but a hydo lifter is a hydro lifter(for the most part). Once I got the valve cover off, rocker assembly, and the push rod on the affected lifter off, I used a coat hanger with a short 90 degree on one end and a coil shape onn the other end. THe sharp 90 was used to pull it comepletely out, and coil was used to twist around the lifter, and hold it to get it out. I then grabbed the shinniest lifter out of a 330HD block, slapped it in my motor and put it back together. It never did give out and it never did flatten the cam. I do not recommend you do this at all. I didn't care one bit about that motor. It ran off 5 cylinders, the rings were froze in the pistons. the bearings were shot and it had ALOT of blow-by. Seems to me the professional approach is to replace the cam and lifters so everthing breaks in together. The main risk with replacing the colapsed lifter is flattening a lobe. hope that helps
Any parts store will sell you just one lifter. They run about $6-$7 each.
I had a different problem with the lifters on my 240. They didn't collapse but the quit pumping oil to the rockers. I had heard this little chirping occasionally but only drove on short drives. Then I left Washington and headed for Texas with the old girl and A couple of them got real noisy after about 1000 miles. I pulled the valve cover and 3 rockers were bone dry. I ended up poking holes in the valve cover and manaully oiling them at every fill up. Then after I got here I just replaced the problem ones and right away 3 more started chirping so I replaced all the rest and now they all oil just fine.
