Ford Supplier Issues and Attitude Problems

There are many threads on here that either begin with or evolve into the topic of parts shortages affecting both new builds and repairs. Nothing new for most industries over the past few years, but others have emerged from most of that stress. Ford is still struggling, and I came across this article that helps explain it IMO. Ranked second last in Supplier Relations and dropping more than any others from 2023 - 2024 is telling. They treat their suppliers like dirt. Karma. Ford Ranked Second To Last In 2024 Supplier Relations Study (fordauthority.com)

There might be some light at the end of the tunnel with this other article, explaining how Ford is throwing out their previous model in an attempt to become better partners with suppliers. Ford Launches New Supplier Program Amid Strained Relations (fordauthority.com)

I titled this "Ford Supplier Issues" but in reality it is a Ford attitude issue with their suppliers.

It also seems that the production quality of some of these suppliers is lacking.
It can only be a race to the bottom for so long.

Not making excuses for the supplier. but supplier quality is a direct reflection of Ford. If Ford, in dealing with their supplier, is more focused on cost, constantly pushing the supplier to reduce cost without understanding (or caring) about the impact on quality, then the supplier will respond accordingly. It is no secret that quality has not been a priority in the Ford corporate mindset. They have recently announced programs to address this but, like most corporate pronouncements of changed practices, they are just empty words that will not flow down to everyday operations in any meaningful way.

Meaningful change starts at the top. Change management requires a buy in of the corporate employees, union and its members.

This has not occurred.

Running Parral would be its supplies, transportation networks and parts supplying network to the dealerships.

That is as I see it.

I also see that none of this has occurred.

Ford said they were focusing on quality and estimated they would have real improvements by 2025. They likely put pressure on their suppliers this year, demanding higher quality and consistency, but haven't changed their contracts SLAs. That would surely sour supplier relationships if it was a one-way street rather than a partnership to improve. They want the speed and low cost, but now they demand much higher quality than when the contracts were bid.

Maybe this will speed up the dash cluster replacement I've been waiting on for a month.

SLAs aren’t worth the paper that they are printed on if they aren’t enforced. I saw it way too often when I was writing vendor contracts.

Quality - inspect the sub-assemblies as they come in. Reject any sloppy work. Hold the vendors accountable.
