I have a 2003 F350 4x4 5000 mi., that by intermitence (about once a week), produce a stange sound comming from the right side front area. It sound like a hammer hitting a large cast iron piece (TAWK). The sound is heard only once, on moving the truck after been parked for a while, when moving the first 6 feets, on reverse or forward direction.
A Ford dealer as checked the front direction assembly and did not found anything wrong.
When the problem occur, the front wheel hubs are desangaged and the transfer case is at 2X4. The truck is moving slowly.
Could the right side brake caliper stiks in and produce this sound on release when the truck start moving?
Could the right side shock absorber stiks in and produce this sound on release when the truck start moving?
Any one as notice a similar problem?
does it happen right after you start moving.. after the truck has only been started for just a little while? On startup, or a little after i should say, a sometimes loud "thump" can be heard. Sounds like you hit something.. kinda scary sometimes. This is a common noise, nothing mechanical from what i understand.
Stangely, this morning, I press the brake, I start the engine, I shift to DRIVE, and without depressing the brakes (so not moving) two second later, the same sound is heard. So I have this sound even when not moving. It does not seem to come from the drive shaft universal joints, witch sound should have come from center or rear underneat of the truck.
Got the same "problem". Also right after engine start and coming from the right front of the truck. Sounds like somebody is hitting the truck with a hammer from underneath. Did some investigation and talked to a couple of techs. The noise (clunk) apparently is caused by the vacuum system that engages/disengages the automatic front hubs.
The way the system was explained to me, it made perfect sense. So I am no longer worried about it.
canuck.. how could that be? I have manual hubs, and i still have the clunking noise.
If you look at my previous post and it's link, is it possible that the noise is coming from the A/C system. This would seem to fit the conditions of all the trucks that have the noise.
I was actually going out on a test drive with a tech from the dealer and just after start up, there she goes "thunk" like somebody hit her with a hammer. The tech then told me the story about the vacuum activation / release of the automatic hubs and explained how they worked. Made sense to me. He told me not to worry about it.
Now, since you have the same prob on a truck with manual hubs, I am getting kind of puzzled. The AC theory seems to have a point too. I shall ask the tech, next time I see him.
Maybe we are getting close to the cause of the problem but as for the A/C is is OFF, since the temperature up here is between -10 and 35 degrees F. My front hubs are also set to AUTO, not LOCK. It is good to know that I am not the only one experiencing this problem.

On our trucks we have an airbag activation noise.
in other words when you first put your key in an turn to the first pos,(without engaging the starter)
"listen ,you will hear a activation noise after about 2 seconds".
If the ac /heat control is left in anything but the off
pos. you will get a thump on start up.
This is the blend door recieving vacum an slaming shut.
Sorry about my post before I thought you were moving then stopping!
