Do I have the wrong Carburetor

So I have a 1985 f150 flareside with a 302 I can’t for the life of me tune it.

I type in the model # and this is what it shows up. For an f250 351W

What's the problem? Won't idle? Won't run down the road? Floods out?

High idle, won’t stay running sounds like it’s flooded, step on pedal and it stalls out.

Have you tried rebuilding it? How long has it been since that was done?

That is who I used for the Jeep carburetor. There was wear in the throttle shaft. Excellent service. I had the carb back in a week.

I am getting the impression the carb he is using is brand new? If that is the case, why send it out for a rebuild?

When you try to run it and then it stops, look down the carb throat right after it stops with the aircleaner off. Do you see liquid fuel dripping? If you do, it is flooding.

If you do not see liquid fuel, are you having to pull the choke door back to look down inside the carb throat?

I assume you have removed all the EFI stuff so this 85' 302 is no longer looking for EFI ?

I interpreted that as the one on the truck does not match what was listed on the website.

Maybe it is some cheap Motorcraft/ Autolite clone that you will never get to run correctly. When I was a regular on a Jeep forum the guys would always complain about the Weber clones that they could not get to run right.

I ran a clone on my Bronco II (a 2100 2bbl) and I did have a few hiccups I had to address when I first installed it, but after that it ran fine for several years till I changed the engine.

Chokes can be aggravating to get right. Do you have a wire to the choke cap? If you want to take the choke out of the picture, you can loosen the 3 screws on the cap, and twist the cap while holding the throttle open (engine off) till the choke door opens straight up. Caution, once you do this, the engine will be stubborn to start and run when cold. You will have to pump the pedal to the floor 3 times before cranking cold, and then you will have to pat the gas pedal a little bit to keep it running till it warms up. If you want to try the choke in some sort of mid-position between closed and open you can. I would advise you to mark the cap position where it was when you started as a reference.

The choke has linkage on the carb that makes the engine idle fast when cold. The choke also "chokes" the air off to the engine to make it run richer when it's cold. If the choke never opens up, all this will still be in play when the engine is warmed up and there is no way you can tune it like this.
