How much fluid??

Can someone please tell me how much transmission fluid I should put in my 89 460. I just changed it a week ago I put over a gallon in, I just checked the thing it is almost bone dry. Is this normal? there are no leaks in the pan or in my driveway. Also 7quarts or 6 quarts of oil?

The 460 with an E4OD takes something like 15qts of ATF. Yours is probably not an E4OD but it will likely take a lot of fluid. Even my chebby car tranny takes about 12qts.

One gallon is nothing. If you drained the torque converter, that alone holds about a gallon and until it fills back up, it will keep your fluid level low.

Whenever you change tranny fluid always run it for a minute and then check fluid and top up. Then run it a day and check the fluid and top it up etc. Do this for at least a week, it may take that long to get the air out of the system. I usually add about 3/4 of the amount of fluid mentioned in the manual and run then top up, that is if I drained the TC and cooler. If you didn't drain the coller and TC then you will use less than 15qts but still much more than 8qts.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

If you have a C6 it will hold 12 qts if you drained the torque converter. An E4OD will hold 15-16 qts. Check here to ID the tranny.
