Looking for a transmission

My buddy's having trouble locating a transmission for his '56 F-100. It has a 272ci motor and a 3 speed Fordmatic transmission. His mechanic says his original tranny is total crap and replacing would be less expensive than trying to rebuild. Any leads out there for a good tranny?

Also used in in the cars (son's 67 Galaxy had one, we replaced it with one from a 68 LTD) . The bell housings could be swapped depending on the engine. I have 3 but cant swear how good they are. Especially after dumping water out of the pan of one.
A local yard might have one but, don't know about condition. Perry City Auto Parts, Joe Allen 607-387-5892

Mostly the FMX Cruise-a-matic, Transmissions are ok. Most mechanics don't know about the workings of one. Anything special that is "junk"?
