Whats up. I ran into a problem today putting a new carb on my 79 f-250 with a 460 in it.I had a holley 600 and decided i wanted a little more umph so I went and bought aa Edelbrock 750. When I took the old carb off I discovered that the spacer that was being used was the wrong one.It had the two small holes in the front and two big holes in the back. So I went to the parts store and bought a new one. I put the spacer and new carb on and it was backfiring when I gave it some gas. I didnt really have time to mess with it, seeing how I dont know much about this area, so I put the old carb back on. Well, the old carb started backfiring to.Does anyone know if it is just out of adjustment or something and if so what would be the best way to adjust it. The new carb is the one I will putting back on there when I have a little time. Thanks.
Are the holes in the intake manifold small in the front and big in the back?
It sounds like you have a vacuum leak between the carb and intake. Spray around the base of the carb with some carb cleaner while it is iding and see if the idle changes. If so, you have a vacuum leak. Also go down the sides of the intake where it meets the heads.

Before I went to work tonight I thought I would give it a quick looking over and you were right Ixman1, it was a vacuum leak. The funny thing is that its a hole about the size of quarter. The old spacer had a tab on the bottom passenger side and the new one doesnt. I wasn't paying much attention. Thanks again.
