Tom McCahill
Tom McCahill
Recently I ran across some old Mechanix Illustrated magazines online featuring Tom McCahill auto reviews and general auto articles. I used to read him when I was a teen in the 50's and 60's. Probably not many here were around then. But, you might actually enjoy it if you seek out a few issues of Mechanix Illustrated., which had some interesting stuff itseld.
But McCahill was more than just a reviewer. He was associated with Nascar Speed Week and new a lot of the Detroit brass, He also wasn'tshy about opinions on the cars he tested. He'd comment on their styling, pricing , size and more. Not only that, he wrote with style -- probably overblown, but it was fun. Much better than the to the mushmouth stuff I see these days -- with reviewers who mostly seem to think that you should buy whatever they're testing with the the full option package. (They also tend to sound alike).
I'm far from "it was all better in my day -- it certainly wasn't for a lot of stuff. But, if you're willing to put out a little effort to find this stuff, you might just enjoy it.
I think that the basic website is Internet Archive -- and you have to fiddle around as best as you can until you can actually get to what you want. Probably there is a straightforward way to set up a search, but that would be just too easy.
