when you crank up a motor and it puffs out some oil smoke and then stops smoking is that your valve stem seals i think it is time to rebuild the heads. there is no blowby just when i crank it up it comes from the pipes.
In most case that would be your valve guides. If everything else is OK you can change the seals with out removing the heads.
Just get a valve spring compressor that's made for doing them while on the block.
You'll also need to use an air hose hooked up to the spark plug hole to keep the valves from dropping into the cylinder

I bought one of these at NAPA for $35 to change my springs.
They are very easy to use, I would recommend one to anyone.
When you pull the springs, try rocking your valve stem side to side. You shouldn't be able to really tell any movement with your hands. To properly measure, you would need a dial gauge mounted on the head but if you notice a significant amount of movement, then you would need new guides. Otherwise the seals are more than likely the culprit.
Iffen you're too poor to own a compressor, you can take rope, feed it thru the spark plug hole, and move the crank to push the piston .. and rope.. against the bottom of the valve to hold it in place. Someone will give a better 'splanation.
