My skylight is leaking, I have cleaned the drain hoses etc and the problem persists, I believe the gasket has gone bad and rather than try to replace it I'd like to seal it up since I don't open it. Theres lots of sealants out there, any reccommendation on which to get? I trust 3M over other brands.
Thanks, Oj
btw, its a '97 Explorer XLT, my little sweetie, less than 140K and well maintained.
Do you get water flow from all 4 drain hoses for the sunroof? I'd be very hesitant to attempt to seal the sunroof without knowing for certain that all drains are working and that the issue is actually a seal for the sunroof. If you have or do confirm that all are flowing and the leak is definitely not due to a plugged drain, and you don't wish to source a replacement seal, then you probably should visit an RV sales place to find some RV roof sealant since they would be designed for a similar environmental application. But even those sealants are not permanent and will require cleaning and reapplication every few years. The probably will be a bit ugly as well since careful application is not the typical use case - "out of sight, out of mind."
I was not aware there are 4 drains, I've been struggling with the 2 drains in the front running weedwhacker line thru them etc. I felt the gasket material has gone bad and I was getting seepage due to that, anyway I also went to a bodyshop supply place and they fixed me up with some silicon goo that I applied to seal the thing up. It has yet to rain so I don't know if I did a good job, it did turn out clean. Perhaps when it goes bad I'll cut it out and check those other 2 drains, I also looked at what it'd take to remove the whole thing and if the gasket is available from Ford. I have been known to do **** that is best left to others.
The rear drains drain down the pillar behind the front doors and helps contribute to the rockers rusting in that area. I guess one good thing about if those drains are plugged is maybe your Explorer will be less prone to rust there.
