I've seen posts on epinion.com regarding much better gas milage on excursions using a K&E Air filter--cost about $50.00
Anyone have any info on this? Why wouldnt Ford Engineers use it to begin with if it works so well.
Thanks

I don't want to start an online scrap about it, but I've seen mag articles that claim it doesn't clean as well & doesn't really allow any more air than the paper type, except perhaps at wide open throttle. Do you really want to be involved with cleaning & re-oiling? Perceived differences are probably due to changes in engine sound.
I dont wan to do anything to mess up the way its supposed to run--guess Ill be staying with the stock filter--just seen that around a few times about better milage--my computer on board so far reads 9.5 avg-- but guess it needs to break in a bit--v10 4x4
The conical type filter on the V-10 is good for about 4 hp with a K&N. It is true that the filter does not capture particles as small as common paper filters, BUT the K&N has been tested in that it removes the same percentage of harmful particle sizes as a standard paper filter. I myself have not gotten around to putting a K&N in my Excursion, but I use them in all my other vehicles with great results. Some of their filters work better than others. I myself have contacted K&N directly and asked about the mpg increase possibilities for a V-10 Excursion. I was told that there should be an increase in fuel economy due to several factors including the added horse power. But K&N doesn't make claims for increased mpg because accurate testing takes too long. Horse power claims can be figured in minutes on a dyno.
Hope this helps

I have to tell you that K&N is a pretty good filter depending the use of your truck, it adds 4-5 hp although it is unoticeable to me and including MPG (11 in Dallas and 15 on I-35 with just 13000 miles) but I'm sure all of us Excursion owners really don't mind that, after all it wasn't fuel economy what atracted us to the truck. I too was a GM owner before, a 98 Suburban to be exact and I didn't get the gas mileage that I get with this truck (9 MPG in Dallas and 13 in I-35), I gotta tell you I'm a really happy Excursion owner. The idea of Ford putting a V10 I think is awesome, 20% less wear and tear from a V8 (And I've had V8's from Ford, GM and Dodge and I've seen max 240,000 on my last Ford truck until I sold it with no oil leaks inside the cyl's) means lots of happy miles to come if you use your truck for travel or daily use. Now, K&N isn't for everybody, if you live in the country (dirt roads and lots of dust) I would keep the stock filter. Altough I live in Dallas and rarely use 4WD on my truck, I installed K&N filter and soon plan to get a set of exhaust mods for better HP (Cant stand that GM Escalade with all that power, sorry GM owners, but my experience with Ford has been awesome compared to previous vehicles) I also love engines and Ford Trucks and V8 Cars are my Aquiles heel. I have several mods on my Bullitt GT with a K&N filter, an X-pipe with cats and soon to install a 9 psi supercharger. With the current mods alone I went from stock 265 HP to 302 HP in the flywheel. What would be nice is to find a V10 engine on Ford cars too! I think that anyone that came from a Tahoe and Suburbans to this awesome truck did a great buy, yes it's quite big, but it still fits on my standard 2 car garage with room for another truck in my standard garage.
Happy driving to all!
