I have a 1956 f100, my problem is trying to figure out the size of the engine i think it is a 292 but not sure. are the numbers in it which will help me determine the size? And it has a 2 speed auto trans, what type is this. Engine sounds great and I've had it for around 15 years and it time to get busy and fix it up.
I appreciate any help and glad I ran accross the site.
The original engine would be a 272 cuin. Look for numbers on the driver side of the block just forward of the oil filter and post here. Someone should be able to decipher them for you. The original automatic trans only shows a Lo and Drive position. The trans starts out in second when in drive and so appears to be a 2 speed. Lo starts in 1st. If you start in low, shift to Drive and then immediately pull it back to Lo, it will shift to 2nd and stay there untill you shift to Drive again. OR, you could have a later model car trans which is actually a 2-speed.
Cut and paste all between the quote signs. That will give you all the engine ID info you ever wanted.
Altho the base V8 was the 272 the 292 could be ordered.
That tranny is the stock FordoMatic so treat it gently as rebuilds are pricey.
It is really a 3 speed but as mentioned it is a bit strange to use. The later Cruisomatic is actually a Fordo with a fully selectable 3 speeds.
Just got thru looling for the number on the block and did not see any, the oil filter is located on the drivers side towards the front of the engine. Right next to that is the fuel pump. The distrubuter is located on the front of the engine almost right above the water pump. It has a 4 barrel carb. Ther are numbers on the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold but could not locate numbers on the block. Thanks for your help.
Start by giving US some info.
Casting ID off the block, intake, exhaust, etc.
FE blocks have a 352 cast in on the drivers side front. The only way to tell the size is pull a head and measure bore/stroke. Exceptions are a few Hi-Po blocks which have some other clues.
