Dropping Back Down to a F150

I have a 2020 F350 DRW today. We sold our 5th wheel camper & I'll be selling my 28' enclosed car hauler in a couple months. The F350 will be over kill & worse, it doesn't fit in the parking space in Fl. I'm thinking of going back to an F150.

I'll be keeping my Axis A22 boat. The boat boat, trailer, gear and fuel weigh 7,100 lbs. I'm thinking about bringing it down to Florida with me in the winters then back to Wisconsin in the summer. On local drives I'm sure the F150 will be fine. I'm unsure about the long 1,200 mile journey. It looks like Fords web site recommends a weight distribution hitch for anything over 5,000 lbs. This type of hitch won't work on a boat trailer so I need to have a weight carrying hitch.

Does the factory hitch handle 700lbs of tongue load & 7,100lbs of dead weight? I can't seem to find any info on Fords web site. I'm assuming I will need the trailer tow package, at a minimum, but probably the max tow pack to be safe.

Yes, class IV hitches are 1,000 tongue and 10,000 pull.

****I have 2021 Powerboost, tow package (not max), hitch sticker says Class V, trailer weight 5,000/500 tongue. With WD hitch, trailer weight 11,600/1,160 tongue.

The Max Tow Pkg has a class IV hitch. I replaced my Super Duty with my current truck in 2015. It has done everything I need it to do with ease. Tows 22' boats and utility trailers. A trip to the coast and back is about 350 miles for me, no issues towing a 5k lb boat. Boats have a different weight bias than most trailers, centering a lot of the weight over the axles. You should be okay without a WD hitch.

I’d keep the F350 Or trade down to F350 SRW.

so much safer & in control out on the big road with that long of a haul.

My truck handles a 25 foot, 7000 lb. travel trailer just fine, but I use a weight distribution hitch; it slumps quite a bit without the WDH. See Pages 22, 23 and 24 in Ford's towing guide (read the numbered notes at the bottom of the pages, too):

Thanks for the replies & info. I know an F150 short bed will fit in my driveway and in my garage. My F350 DRW is about 2 feet too long to fit in the garage. It fits in the driveway; however, the back bumper is almost touching the garage door & the front bumper is close to the street. The boat is nothing for the F350, you can forget that it's back there.

I’d move to a bigger driveway & keep the F350

I would love to have a bigger driveway and garage and place to keep my toys. The price of houses & interest rates eliminates many of the dreams I had.

I agree on the F250 with a short box with either of the gas engines being a good middle ground. A properly equipped F150 will do the job, but I would prefer the F250 for the long trips.

I ended up getting a 2024 F150 with the Max Tow Package & Trailer tow mirrors. I had my cab loaded, the bed loaded & the boat hooked up; then made about a 1300 mile drive (Madison WI to Orlando FL). The truck was amazing. I'm sure the F350 would have been better however I'm very satisfied with the F150. In my new Florida life, the F150 will be a better every day fit.
